Bleed
The area of colour or image that extends beyond the edge of the crop marks printed on the sheet before trimming to finished size.
CMYK
An abbreviation for the Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black inks used in process printing.
Coated stock
A range of papers or boards with a china clay coating to the surface of the sheet on which colours appear rich and vibrant when printed
Collate
The process of bringing together individual sheets or items into the correct order or combination.
Cracking
Where the surface of coated stocks appear to crack when folding.
Crash number
The process of numbering collated NCR sets simultaneously.
Creep
The effect of several folded collated and stitched sections within an individual book. Each of the inner four page sections creep out on the fore edge slightly more than the previous.
Crop marks
The position on the edge of the printed sheet indicating where a project is to be trimmed.
Encapsulate
Where a printed sheet is trapped between layers of clear plastic with a sealed overlap all around.
EPS file
Encapsulated Postscript file. A format that supports raster and vector artwork, editable text and clipping paths.
File format
How and in what application a press ready file will be supplied or generated.
Fold marks
The position on the edge of the printed sheet indicating where a project is to be folded or creased before folding.
Greyscale
A term used for a black and white picture.
Litho
A process used in the printing of sheets.
Material
The paper or board on which the project is to be printed or supplied.
Portable document format. A format where all images and fonts are embedded in a single file allowing it to be viewed and printed from most computer systems.
Process colour
The combination of CMYK tint values used to create image and colour.
Proof
The process used to check a project to ensure all details are correct before proceeding to production.
RIP
Raster Image Processor. The device or software contained within it that converts the pixel ‘raster’ image into separated dot values for printing.
Stitched
The process of securing a collated or collated and folded document with one or more wire stitches.
Seal
The application of an all over clear sealant to printed sheets to prevent marking.
Spot UV varnish
The application of a gloss or matt varnish to selected areas which is dried through UV light.
Stock
Another term used for the paper or board on which the project is to be printed or supplied.
TIFF
Tagged Image File Format. A file format for raster images only.
Trapping
The expansion of a coloured area or type to ensure a good fit between two colours butting up to each other.
Trimmed
A straight cut sheet to the required size.
Uncoated stock
A range of papers or boards with a more porous open surface to the sheet on which colours appear flatter when printed.
Work and turn
The process of printing both the front and back of a sheet side by side, turning the sheets over and printing the reverse of the sheet with the same set of plates to back up each copy
Cutting forme
The block used when knifing out a shape from printed sheets.
JPEG
A method of compressing the size of a large image.
Knife out
The process of cutting a shape from printed sheets.
Laminate
Where a printed sheet has a layer of transparent film applied through heat. This can be either one or both sides of the sheet with a variety of finishes available.
Perfect bound
The process of binding a book by gathering the folded sections, grinding off the spine and sealing with hot glue inside a wrap-a-round cover.
Sheet work
The process of firstly printing the front(s) of a sheet(s), then turning the sheet(s) over and printing the reverse with a different set(s) of plates.
Spot colour/s
Single mixed ink(s) from Pantone based colours used for printing.
UV varnish
The application of a gloss or matt varnish to the total area of the sheet which is then dried through UV light.
